Advice wanted: walking a dog with separation anxiety

I responded to a Gumtree ad (like Craigslist) for an elderly woman who needs to have her dog walked because she can no longer do it and is afraid she will have to go home with him. A couple of days ago I met with her and the dog to discuss what they needed and for me to meet the dog (Alvin). Today when I showed up to take Alvin for a walk, he was very unhappy about leaving his owner and would periodically stop and refuse to walk anymore. I was able to convince him a bit, but I got to a point where he flatly refused. Once we turned around, he was happy as Larry and was walking perfectly. Its owner told me this has happened before with other walkers. I thought if I kept showing up and testing, Alvin would eventually get the idea, but is there anything I can do to make it a more positive experience for him? Was I thinking of treats maybe? Thank you very much for each and every tip!
