Our dog is becoming more aggressive and we don’t know what to do. I’m afraid of him when I know that you can work on this.

Our dog Lodewyk who is a Collie X (+- 5yrs male) has been aggressive lately and tried and managed to bite me several times. He really is the sweetest and most affectionate dog. That said, he is still an anxious dog who is scared of loud noises and sudden movements. On walks he is very well behaved and doesn’t mind the other dogs. When he meets people, he either doesn’t care or barks excessively until he gets excited about them (usually 5 minutes, probably until he realizes they’re not a threat). I know that when a dog is aggressive I need to look at the triggers/reasons. Only to notice that he doesn’t growl or warn you, he just bites out of nowhere). Of all the times he was aggressive, I think it was mostly from a fear point of view. I accidentally hurt him when he was lying on the couch when I had to apply a prescription cream for a rash he had. That day was BAD and I realize that he is aggressive towards me when we are both in that zone. He also doesn’t like being forced to do things. He had to have his teeth cleaned and when we took him to his appointment he nearly bit the vet nurse when he weighed him (luckily she backed off fast enough). He was aggressive and tried to bite me again today and that’s when the thing on the couch clicked. I’m scared but on the other hand I just ignore him and walk away if he tries to bite me then I don’t pay attention to him. He bit my dad and mom once on separate occasions and I can’t remember what that was like. Background: We adopted him from a local shelter 4 years ago when we had 2 other older dogs and he was a perfect fit with them. He was the greatest of them. Our 1 dog passed away in January 2020 and the other in October 2021. Both had to be euthanized due to health issues. My parents really want another dog and have gone to a shelter to pick out a dog they like and that dog was VERY aggressive towards Lodewyk who was non-committal and hid behind my dad. We will go to another shelter on Saturday to introduce him to other dogs; we can like dogs as much as we want, but it’s up to Lodewyk. Here in South Africa a specialist dog trainer is EXPENSIVE and if we decide to go down that route it will probably only be in May due to funding. Can we do something? I don’t want to be afraid of him or walk on eggshells when I touch him and I’m afraid he’ll bite me.
