Training a dog to protect a cat?

sorry if this is a stupid question. but for a while now i have been thinking about getting a dog, i love animals and i currently have 3 cats and some tarantulas. I think it would be good for me to do daily walks as well. however, my senior cat is constantly harassed by my kittens. he’s only 6.5 pounds, he’s got his claws on the front (his previous owners did) and his teeth are really small, so he can’t really defend himself. I have done everything I can to curb this behavior, and I get to separate them overnight. but still, my kitties (especially the older one, who is huge) will grab her by the scruff when they get the chance. I can’t always take care of them, I can’t always protect her. So would it be possible to train a dog to intervene when I can’t? What breeds of dogs do you recommend? How would you do this?
