How to explore a relationship when most of it happened before the beginning of a story

I am writing a short story for my writing class and I want to reveal a lot of history between two characters. The general idea of my story is that an estranged father and son meet again and go hunting for a weekend after not speaking to each other since the main characters’ childhood. The tension eventually leads to confrontations and discussions about past events and both characters discover that neither of their perspectives on what happened were really accurate. However, I’m afraid this will involve too much discussion about the events that happened before the story that I’ve been led to believe is not great writing. If it was a full book, maybe I could start the story from childhood, but the word count is too short for that.
